In the early 17th century, Native Americans routinely collected oil from pools that formed on the surface using it for fuel and medicinal purposes. In the 1840's, a Canadian Geologist Abraham Gesner discovered that kerosene can be distilled from crude oil or coal and can be used for lamp lighting. The oil industry is now taking shape. In 1859, a retired railroad conductor drilled a well in Titusville, Pennsylvania. It was a tremendous success. Soon after, others drilled wells in the area. By the 1860's the industry is thriving, railroads and river barges were transporting oil throughout the region. The first oil pipeline was built in 1865 and was 5 miles in length. Ten years later, a 50-mile pipeline was in operation in Pittsburgh. The 1880's brought oil exploration to Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois & Indiana. The first "gusher" didn't happen until 1901 in Eastern Texas. At the turn of the century, Texas, California and Oklahoma was the top oil producing states The rest is now history. With America's oil boom. Countries all over the world entered into production. In 1908 when oil was discovered in Iran, it was determined then that the Persian Gulf Region held a very significant amount of oil. Today, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is responsible for much of the worlds oil supply. Keep in mind though that our oil imports do not solely depend on OPEC. Overall, by 2005 it is projected that 76% of our imports are to come from outside OPEC nations. 85% of the heating oil we use is refined in the United States. In 1975, then President Gerald Ford established the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to ensure a safeguarded, constant fuel supply. The reserve hold approximately 650 million barrels of crude oil and at peak storage can hold in excess of 700 million barrels. The two sites are at undisclosed locations in Louisiana and Texas. Should fuel be needed, the President along with the Department of Energy has the authority to release oil from the reserves.
